Development History

medium

Kh-80/Meteorit was an ambitious Soviet long-range supersonic cruise missile project.

Kh-80 is commonly associated with the Soviet Meteorit family, a long-range supersonic cruise missile effort intended to provide high-speed strategic strike options from air, sea, or ground-related variants. The project belonged to a period when the USSR explored alternatives to subsonic cruise missiles by emphasizing speed, altitude profiles, and penetration against air defenses. It did not become a widely fielded standard weapon, but it remains important because it shows how Soviet designers approached long-range standoff strike before modern Russian cruise-missile families matured.

Technical Profile

medium

The missile concept emphasized supersonic speed, long range, and complex launch configurations.

Technically, the Kh-80/Meteorit concept was much larger and faster than conventional tactical cruise missiles. Open-source profiles describe liquid-fuel propulsion with booster assistance and a high-speed flight profile intended to penetrate defenses. Different designations are linked to air-launched, naval, and ground-related versions, which can make public naming confusing. The missile's complexity was both its advantage and weakness: high speed and range promised survivability, but size, cost, and integration demands made practical deployment difficult compared with simpler subsonic cruise missiles.

Operational Use

medium

Kh-80's significance is mostly developmental rather than operational service.

Operationally, Kh-80/Meteorit should be treated cautiously. It is better documented as a Soviet development and test program than as a broadly deployed Russian service missile. Its value for a military database is historical: it illustrates the Soviet search for strategic cruise missiles able to defeat air-defense networks through speed and range. Lessons from such projects informed later thinking about long-range precision strike, even when the specific missile did not become a common operational weapon.
