Development History

medium

The Mi-26 was created as a Soviet heavy-lift helicopter for cargo too large for ordinary rotorcraft.

The Mil Mi-26, NATO reporting name Halo, was developed by the Mil design bureau as a very heavy transport helicopter for military and civil cargo missions. It entered service during the late Soviet period and became known as the largest helicopter type to reach serial production. The program answered a practical requirement: moving artillery, vehicles, engineering equipment, aircraft components, and disaster-relief loads where roads or runways were unavailable. Later Mi-26T and Mi-26T2 variants modernized avionics and commercial/military usability while preserving the basic heavy-lift concept.

Technical Profile

medium

Mi-26 is an eight-blade, twin-engine heavy-lift helicopter with roughly 20-ton payload capability.

Technically, the Mi-26 is defined by payload. It uses a very large eight-blade main rotor, two powerful turboshaft engines, and a spacious cargo hold designed for heavy internal or external loads. Public profiles commonly cite about 20 tonnes of lift capacity, placing it far above most conventional transport helicopters. The aircraft is not an attack helicopter despite the current page category; its real role is heavy transport. It can carry troops, vehicles, relief supplies, or sling-loaded cargo, and variants add updated avionics, reduced crew workload, and improved night or adverse-weather capability.

Operational Use

medium

Mi-26 serves military logistics, disaster relief, recovery, and heavy cargo transport roles.

Operationally, the Mi-26 gives Russian and export users a way to move loads that would otherwise require fixed-wing transport, roads, or cranes. It has been used for military logistics, aircraft recovery, firefighting support, construction, and emergency relief. Its size makes it expensive and maintenance-intensive, but no smaller helicopter can replace it in the heaviest vertical-lift missions. For readers, the Mi-26's importance is logistical rather than tactical: it enables movement of equipment and supplies in terrain or crises where conventional transport infrastructure is inadequate.
