Research Notes

Compact 9x39 mm system with modular fittings

The Groza concept emphasized compactness and heavy close-range effect, especially in 9x39 mm configurations using subsonic ammunition. Its bullpup layout reduced overall length, while the modular kit allowed suppressor and grenade-launcher configurations. That made it attractive for urban combat, special police, and internal-security missions.

Distinctive but limited adoption

Groza is more notable as a specialized weapon than as a standard service rifle. Bullpup ergonomics, unusual handling, maintenance complexity, and the availability of simpler AK-family alternatives limited its spread. Its real significance is showing Russian interest in compact integrated weapon systems for special operations rather than mass infantry issue.
