Research Notes

Russian automatic pistol for security forces

The OTs-33 Pernach is a Russian selective-fire machine pistol associated with Igor Stechkin and the TsKIB SOO design lineage. It was developed around the 9x18 mm Makarov cartridge family as a compact automatic sidearm for police, internal-security, and paramilitary users rather than as a conventional infantry rifle.

Controllable burst fire in a pistol-sized package

The weapon combines a detachable shoulder stock concept with high-capacity magazines and automatic fire, attempting to give close-protection and special police users more suppressive capability than a standard service pistol. Its value lies in compactness and rapid short-range fire, not in range or armor penetration.

Specialized successor to the APS concept

The Pernach occupies the same narrow tactical space as earlier Soviet and Russian automatic pistols: useful for vehicle crews, protective details, or units needing a concealable automatic weapon, but overshadowed by compact submachine guns and short carbines for most assault roles.
