Development History

medium

R-11 Zemlya was the Soviet tactical missile that began the Scud line.

R-11 Zemlya, known to NATO as SS-1B Scud-A, was one of the Soviet Union's early mobile tactical ballistic missiles. It followed German V-2 influence but was redesigned for a smaller, transportable battlefield role. Development work in the 1950s under Soviet missile bureaus led to a system that could be moved by ground forces and equipped with conventional or nuclear payloads. Its importance is historical: R-11 created the design lineage that led to the much more widely exported R-17/Scud-B family.

Technical Profile

medium

The missile used liquid propulsion, inertial guidance, and a mobile launcher for short-range strike.

Technically, R-11 was a short-range liquid-fueled ballistic missile. It used inertial guidance and was carried on mobile support equipment, giving Soviet commanders a theatre missile option that did not require fixed launch sites. Its range and accuracy were limited by later standards, but it provided a mobile nuclear-capable strike system at a time when battlefield atomic weapons shaped doctrine. Handling liquid fuel and oxidizer imposed operational burdens, yet the concept of mobile tactical missiles proved durable.

Operational Use

medium

R-11 was a bridge from experimental rockets to mobile Soviet theatre missile forces.

Operationally, R-11 Zemlya gave Soviet forces an early ability to deliver heavy warheads against rear-area or battlefield targets. Its practical service life was overshadowed by improved successors, especially the R-17 Elbrus/Scud-B, but its doctrinal role was important. It demonstrated how mobile launchers, missile brigades, and nuclear-capable tactical rockets could fit into Soviet ground operations. For the equipment page, R-11 should be read as the origin point of the Scud family rather than the globally famous export model.
