Research Notes

T-34-Based Tank Destroyer

The SU-100 upgraded Soviet self-propelled anti-tank firepower late in World War II.

The SU-100 was developed in 1944 from the SU-85 concept and the T-34 chassis, giving Soviet armored formations a stronger tank destroyer against late-war German armor. Uralmash engineers adapted the hull and casemate around the D-10S 100 mm gun. The design arrived too late for some 1944 offensives but entered units in time for the final campaigns of the war.

D-10S Gun in a Sloped Casemate

The SU-100 traded turret flexibility for a powerful, compact anti-tank package.

The SU-100 retained the broad mechanical base of the T-34 but replaced the turret with a fixed, sloped fighting compartment. Its D-10S 100 mm gun gave much greater armor penetration than the earlier SU-85, while a thicker frontal glacis improved protection. The layout remained cramped and lacked a turret, so doctrine depended on positioning, supporting infantry, and coordination with other armor.

Late-War and Postwar Longevity

The SU-100 fought in 1945 and then served with many Soviet-aligned armies.

SU-100s reached combat units in late 1944 and were used in the final offensives against Germany, including fighting in Hungary and Berlin. After 1945, the vehicle remained in Soviet and allied inventories, with production and transfers supporting Warsaw Pact and export users. Its D-10 gun lineage also mattered beyond the SU-100 because related weapons armed later Soviet tanks.
