ZALA KYB, also called KUB-BLA or Kub-UAV, is a Russian loitering munition developed by ZALA Aero, part of the Kalashnikov group. It was publicly shown at IDEX 2019 and later associated with Russian use in Ukraine. The system represents Russia's move toward expendable precision drones that can search, loiter, and strike without requiring a reusable airframe.
The KYB/KUB is a fixed-wing loitering munition with an electric propulsion layout, modular warhead concept, and preplanned or operator-directed attack profile depending on configuration. It is smaller and simpler than high-end cruise missiles, making it attractive for tactical precision strikes against vehicles, artillery, radars, and positions. Its limitations include payload size, electronic-warfare exposure, and dependence on target detection and control links.
Operationally, KYB fills the gap between artillery, FPV drones, and larger missile systems. It can attack exposed equipment or fixed positions while keeping the launch team away from direct fire. In Ukraine, Russian loitering munitions have become part of a wider reconnaissance-strike complex using spotter drones, electronic warfare, and artillery. KYB's value is tactical affordability and precision rather than strategic range.
