ZALA's Combat-Proven Loitering Munition

medium

ZALA Lancet is a Russian loitering munition developed by ZALA Aero and fielded by Russian forces before becoming highly visible in the Russia-Ukraine war. It evolved from earlier ZALA loitering-munition work into a family of one-way attack UAVs used against artillery, air-defense systems, vehicles, boats, and other point targets. Its combat visibility made it one of Russia's most important drone weapons of the 2020s.

Reconnaissance-Strike Drone Pairing

medium

Lancet uses a fixed-wing or X-wing loitering layout with electro-optical guidance and a warhead sized for tactical targets. It is often employed with ZALA reconnaissance drones that locate and track targets before a Lancet attack. This pairing matters more than the air vehicle alone: the weapon's success depends on detection, target confirmation, control links, operator skill, and resistance to electronic warfare.

Counter-Battery and Point-Target Attack

medium

In Ukraine, Lancet has been used for counter-battery attacks, air-defense suppression, vehicle kills, and strikes on exposed equipment. Its relatively low cost compared with missiles lets Russian forces attack valuable targets repeatedly, especially when reconnaissance drones keep targets under observation. The system also has limitations: electronic warfare, camouflage, decoys, nets, mobility, and short exposure windows can reduce effectiveness. Its battlefield importance is therefore in the kill chain, not just the drone itself.
