Regional Airliner to Flying Radar

The Saab 340 AEW&C adapts a regional turboprop into an airborne surveillance aircraft.

The Saab 340 AEW&C was developed by combining the Saab 340 regional aircraft with Saab's Erieye radar system. This approach gave smaller air forces an airborne early warning capability without the cost and scale of a large jet AWACS. The aircraft became associated with Swedish service and later export or transfer programs.

Erieye Side-Looking Radar

A fixed radar fairing above the fuselage gives wide-area surveillance without a rotating saucer.

Unlike classic rotodome AWACS aircraft, Erieye uses a fixed dorsal radar installation that scans primarily to the sides of the aircraft. The Saab 340 platform provides endurance, crew space, and operating economy for regional surveillance tasks. Its design emphasizes early warning, airspace picture building, and cueing other assets rather than carrying weapons.

Affordable AEW&C Capability

Saab 340 AEW&C aircraft have given smaller air forces a practical airborne surveillance layer.

Saab 340 AEW&C aircraft have served in Swedish-linked roles and with international customers, including modern European transfers. Their importance is strategic: even a small AEW&C fleet can improve air-defense awareness, fighter control, and maritime surveillance. The system shows how mission sensors can turn a modest transport aircraft into a high-value command-and-control node.
