The Saab 2000 Erieye AEW&C combines Saab's Erieye airborne early-warning radar with the high-speed Saab 2000 turboprop airliner platform. It was developed for customers needing airborne surveillance and command capability without buying large jet AWACS aircraft. The system builds on Sweden's long experience with compact AEW solutions for dispersed and defensive air operations.
The aircraft carries a fixed dorsal Erieye active electronically scanned array radar, operator consoles, communications, and identification systems. Its turboprop airframe gives lower operating cost than large jet AWACS while still providing wide-area air and maritime surveillance. The side-looking radar geometry requires mission planning to cover sectors effectively, but modern processing and datalinks allow the aircraft to support fighters, air defenses, and maritime commanders.
Operationally, Saab 2000 Erieye extends a country's radar horizon, improves fighter control, and supports air-defense command decisions. It is especially useful for states that need AEW&C coverage but cannot sustain large E-3-class fleets.
