Research Notes

Swedish weapon-locating radar

ARTHUR was developed as a mobile counter-battery radar for locating hostile artillery and supporting rapid counterfire.

ARTHUR is a Saab weapon-locating system built for the counter-battery mission. Saab describes it as a lightweight, highly mobile system deployed close to the forward line of own troops. Its development reflects the same battlefield need as Firefinder and Q-53 radars: detect projectiles in flight, calculate where they came from, and give commanders actionable data before enemy guns can displace.

Mobile radar with fast redeployment

The system emphasizes automation, mobility, and rapid deploy/redeploy cycles to improve survivability.

ARTHUR's design is shaped by survivability. Saab highlights rapid deployment and redeployment, automation, and the ability to handle multiple targets simultaneously. A weapon-locating radar that stays too long in one place can itself become a target, so the system is intended to work quickly, generate firing-point and impact-point data, then move before enemy counterfire arrives.

Counter-battery freedom of maneuver

ARTHUR helps maneuver forces operate under artillery threat by turning incoming fire into targetable locations.

In service, ARTHUR is valuable because artillery duels are often decided by detection and response time. By locating hostile guns, mortars, and rockets, it allows friendly forces to suppress or avoid threats and supports intelligence mapping of enemy fire patterns. Its continued sale and upgrade path show that mobile weapon-locating radar remains central to modern land warfare.
