Research Notes

Swedish-designed disposable recoilless anti-armor weapon

The AT4, adopted by the United States as the M136, is a disposable shoulder-fired anti-armor weapon developed from Swedish FFV/Bofors design work. It replaced or supplemented older light anti-armor rockets in many Western forces.

Simple direct-fire weapon with stronger punch than M72

AT4 fires an unguided fin-stabilized projectile from a preloaded launch tube. It gives infantry a more powerful single-shot weapon than the M72 LAW, while remaining simpler and cheaper than a guided missile system.

Widely adopted multipurpose infantry launcher

The AT4 family became common because it balances lethality, cost, training burden, and portability. Later variants expanded beyond classic anti-armor use into confined-space, high-explosive, and multipurpose roles for urban combat.
