Soviet tactical transport workhorse
The An-12 became a central Soviet four-engine tactical transport aircraft.
The An-12 was developed by Antonov as a four-engine turboprop military transport roughly comparable in role to the C-130 class. It became a core Soviet military transport aircraft because it could move troops, cargo, and airborne equipment over long distances. Antonov's design emphasized ruggedness, rear loading, and operation from less developed airfields.
