Research Notes

New-generation Antonov regional jet

The An-148 was Antonov's modern regional jet with rough-field design priorities.

The An-148 was developed by Antonov as a new-generation regional turbojet aircraft for passenger, mixed, and cargo transport missions. Development began in the early 2000s, giving Antonov a modern high-wing jet with short-range and regional utility. The design sought to preserve Antonov's rough-field tradition while moving into a more modern jet-airliner category.

High-wing jet for less-developed airports

High-wing layout and modern avionics support An-148 operations from less-developed airports.

Unlike many regional jets, the An-148 uses a high-wing layout with engines mounted under the wing but positioned to reduce foreign-object damage risk. Antonov emphasized operation from poorly equipped aerodromes, modern avionics, and flexible passenger or cargo configurations. This makes the aircraft relevant for government and military transport as well as civil regional service.

Regional transport with government and special variants

An-148 service bridges Antonov's older transport tradition and newer Ukrainian regional jets.

An-148 aircraft entered airline and government service, with later derivatives including the stretched An-158 and transport-focused An-178. Its production and operation were affected by post-Soviet industrial geography and later political disruption. The aircraft is important because it links Antonov's Soviet transport heritage with Ukraine's post-independence commercial and state aviation ambitions.
