Overview
An-24 Coke
The An-24, designed by the Antonov Design Bureau in 1957, is a rugged 44-seat twin turboprop transport aircraft optimized for short to medium haul routes from rough airstrips. With a high-wing layout for engine protection and minimal ground support needs, it has seen various adaptations for roles such as tactical transport, reconnaissance, and search and rescue, with approximately 1,000 units produced by 1978.

Research Notes

Rugged Soviet regional transport

The An-24 was a rugged regional turboprop that seeded later Antonov transport variants.

The An-24 was developed by Antonov as a regional twin-turboprop aircraft for short- and medium-haul routes. Although civil in origin, its rugged construction and ability to operate from poorly prepared airfields made it important to military and government transport users. The design became the basis for later cargo and military derivatives, including the An-26.

High-wing turboprop for poor airfields

A high wing and rugged undercarriage made the An-24 useful from rough regional airfields.

The An-24 uses a high wing, twin turboprops, robust landing gear, and a cabin suited to regional passenger or light transport work. Antonov highlighted its structural reliability, operating economy, and ability to use unpaved airfields. Those traits made it attractive far beyond scheduled airline service, especially for state operators in remote areas.

Large production and global utility

Large production and many variants made the An-24 a long-lived state transport aircraft.

The An-24 was built in large numbers and operated across the Soviet Union, allied states, and many developing regions. Its many modifications supported ice patrol, transport, training, and specialist tasks. In a military database, it matters because it shows how civil transport designs often become essential state and military logistics tools.
