Transportable long-range air surveillance

AN/TPS-77 is the transportable member of Lockheed Martin's long-range L-band air-surveillance radar family.

The AN/TPS-77 was developed to provide long-range air surveillance in a deployable package. The radar is associated with the FPS-117 family but tailored for tactical transportability and expeditionary air-defense needs. Public fact sheets describe it as a three-dimensional, long-range air surveillance radar, giving operators a way to establish or reinforce air-picture coverage without building a fixed radar station.

L-band solid-state phased array

The radar uses an L-band solid-state phased-array design with 360-degree coverage and electronic elevation scanning.

TPS-77's design emphasizes reliability, mobility, and coverage. L-band operation supports long-range air surveillance, while phased-array elevation scanning improves tracking without the complexity of a fully fixed-face naval radar. The system can be deployed to remote locations and integrated into national or expeditionary air-defense networks, making it useful for gap-filling and temporary air-sovereignty missions.

Air-picture gap filler

TPS-77 supports national air defense and deployed operations by giving commanders a relocatable long-range radar.

In service, AN/TPS-77 is valuable because air surveillance often needs to move with political, operational, or terrain requirements. A transportable radar can cover temporary gaps, support coalition deployments, or restore radar coverage after infrastructure loss. The system's significance is therefore not just its range, but its ability to place long-range sensing where fixed sites are unavailable or insufficient.
