MRAP response to roadside-bomb threat

The BAE Caiman was procured rapidly for U.S. forces during the MRAP surge in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Caiman emerged from the urgent mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicle procurement wave of the mid-2000s. BAE Systems announced a major 2007 contract for 1,170 Caiman vehicles, showing the scale and urgency of the program. Army Technology profiles the vehicle as a high-mobility, heavily armored multi-theatre platform. Its development was driven by a battlefield reality: conventional trucks were too vulnerable to mines and improvised explosive devices.

Blast protection on a truck chassis

Caiman combined a V-shaped protected hull, armored crew compartment, and tactical truck mobility for convoy and patrol missions.

Caiman design focused on crew survival. Its protected hull and armor package were intended to deflect blast effects and protect passengers from fragments and small-arms fire. The vehicle was not a tank; it was a safer way to move troops and patrol roads under IED threat. Later multi-terrain upgrades improved mobility and reliability for Afghanistan's harsher terrain.

Convoy-protection workhorse

Caiman vehicles served in the MRAP fleet, protecting crews during route security, convoy escort, and patrol operations.

In service, Caiman's importance is measured in lives protected rather than offensive firepower. MRAP vehicles changed how U.S. forces conducted road movement in Iraq and Afghanistan by giving patrols better blast survivability. The tradeoff was weight and mobility, but the vehicle filled a critical wartime need until route-clearance, lighter tactical vehicles, and changing deployments reduced MRAP demand.
