Research Notes

Export member of the Cadillac Gage Commando family

medium

The LAV-150 belongs to the Cadillac Gage Commando family, a line of compact 4x4 armored cars developed from the V-100/V-150 concept. It was marketed for export and internal-security roles where buyers needed a simple amphibious armored car rather than a full infantry fighting vehicle. The platform's long sales life came from its low cost, straightforward automotive layout, and ability to accept many weapons fits.

Small amphibious armored car adaptable to many weapon fits

medium

The LAV-150/V-150 design is a compact wheeled armored car with amphibious capability, protected crew space, and enough payload margin for machine guns, cannon turrets, mortar carriers, anti-tank weapons, or command variants. Its protection is light by modern standards, but the vehicle was never meant to replace tanks. Its strength was giving military police, reconnaissance, and internal-security units a mobile armored platform that was easy to sustain.

Widespread use in security, convoy, and light combat roles

medium

Commando-family vehicles saw use with the United States and many export customers, especially in roles where road mobility and visible armored presence mattered more than heavy battlefield protection. LAV-150 variants were attractive to smaller armies and security forces because they could be bought in useful numbers and customized with familiar weapons. This makes the vehicle important as a global light-armor export story, not only as a US design.
