The M74 tank recovery vehicle was a U.S. armored recovery vehicle converted from M4A3 Sherman tank chassis. It replaced earlier recovery vehicles that lacked the capacity to support heavier postwar tanks.
The M74 combined a fixed superstructure, recovery boom, winch equipment, and a front spade to stabilize the vehicle during pulling and lifting tasks. These features made it more capable than earlier Sherman-based recovery designs for postwar armored units.
The M74 is historically important as a transition from World War II recovery practice to Cold War armored support. It eventually gave way to purpose-built recovery vehicles such as the M88 as U.S. tanks became heavier and recovery demands increased.
