Research Notes

Armored security vehicle from Commando lineage

M1117 evolved from Commando armored cars into a protected military-police security vehicle.

The M1117 Guardian was developed by Textron Marine & Land Systems from the Cadillac Gage Commando armored-car lineage. It was intended primarily for military police and security patrol duties, giving units more protection and firepower than soft-skinned vehicles. Demand increased during operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, where convoy security and route patrols required better protected wheeled vehicles.

4x4 armored patrol vehicle with turret weapons

M1117 combines 4x4 mobility, armor, and turret weapons for patrol and security missions.

Guardian uses a 4x4 armored hull, independent suspension, and turret armament commonly including a heavy machine gun and automatic grenade launcher. It is smaller than many MRAPs and infantry fighting vehicles, but better armed and protected than standard utility trucks. The design fits patrol, internal security, reconnaissance, and escort work rather than front-line mechanized assault.

Military police, export, and Ukraine-era relevance

M1117 service highlights the enduring need for protected patrol and security vehicles.

M1117 vehicles served with U.S. military police and were exported to several partners. The type also reappeared in international attention through transfers to Ukraine and other security-assistance contexts. Its importance lies in showing how armored patrol vehicles fill the space between unarmored trucks and heavier combat vehicles.
