Research Notes

Modern U.S. 81 mm mortar

medium

The M252 became the U.S. medium mortar bridging light 60 mm systems and heavy 120 mm mortars.

The M252 is an 81 mm mortar system that replaced earlier U.S. medium mortars such as the M29 family. It is associated with the British L16 lineage and gives infantry units a stronger indirect-fire option than 60 mm mortars while remaining more portable than 120 mm systems. Its role is company or battalion support depending on organization and mission.

Medium mortar range and payload

medium

The M252 provides more explosive effect and range than 60 mm mortars while retaining man-portable employment.

Compared with the M224, the M252 trades additional crew burden for a heavier bomb and longer reach. It is still a dismounted mortar system, but it requires more effort to move, emplace, and sustain. That makes it valuable for defensive positions, base protection, and infantry units that need responsive indirect fire without relying entirely on artillery batteries.

Continued relevance in expeditionary operations

medium

The M252 has stayed useful because it offers responsive organic fires for dispersed infantry units.

The M252's operational relevance has persisted through Iraq, Afghanistan, and partner-force use because medium mortars are simple, responsive, and scalable. Marine reporting from Iraq shows the system used for base defense against indirect threats, while equipment summaries place it in the broader U.S. 81 mm mortar lineage. It remains an important midpoint between company mortars and heavier artillery.
