The M88A2 HERCULES is the heavy recovery version of the M88 family, designed to support today's much heavier combat vehicles. Its full name, Heavy Equipment Recovery Combat Utility Lift and Evacuation System, reflects its battlefield recovery mission.
HERCULES improves towing, winching, hoisting, braking, and survivability over earlier M88 variants. BAE Systems presents it as the recovery system of choice for modern heavy combat vehicles, especially Abrams-family tanks.
The vehicle is critical because disabled tanks block routes, consume security resources, and can be lost if not recovered quickly. M88A2 gives armored brigades a better chance of recovering battle-damaged or mired tanks without relying on multiple older recovery vehicles.
