RIM-66 variants provided fleet defense against aircraft and later missile threats, using shipboard fire-control systems and semi-active radar homing in many versions. Some variants also retained a secondary anti-ship or surface-target capability.
The RIM-66 lineage is important because it connects older guided-missile ships to modern Standard Missile evolution. Later SM-2, SM-3, and SM-6 families build on the operational logic of common naval missile architecture.
