Extended-range Standard Missile variant
The RIM-67 Standard ER was the extended-range counterpart to the RIM-66 medium-range missile. It used a booster stage to give larger U.S. Navy combatants longer reach against aircraft and other aerial threats.

The missile supported long-range shipboard air defense for vessels equipped with compatible launchers and fire-control systems. Its extended envelope helped protect task groups by engaging threats farther from the defended ship.
RIM-67 helped preserve area-defense capability as the Navy moved from earlier missile families toward more integrated Standard Missile systems. It is a predecessor in concept to later extended-range naval air and missile-defense weapons.
