Development history

medium

W76-1 is the life-extended Trident warhead sustained through an NNSA LEP.

W76-1 is the life-extended version of the W76 submarine-launched ballistic missile warhead used with the Trident system. NNSA describes the W76-1 Life Extension Program as allowing continued deployment of the W76 atop Trident while surveillance activities support annual assessments that the warhead remains safe, secure, and reliable. The program completed production, marking a major stockpile sustainment milestone.

Technical profile

medium

The public profile centers on life extension, safety, security, reliability, and Trident compatibility.

Public technical discussion should stay at the stockpile-management level: W76-1 is a modernized warhead package for submarine-launched ballistic missile reentry systems, not a new delivery vehicle. The publicly relevant features are service-life extension, safety, security, reliability, surveillance, and compatibility with Trident deployment infrastructure. Detailed design characteristics are not needed for a high-quality public equipment page.

Operational use

medium

Its role is strategic submarine-based deterrence and stockpile continuity.

Operationally, W76-1 supports the sea-based leg of U.S. nuclear deterrence on Trident ballistic missile submarines. Its importance is continuity: life extension preserves a certified warhead option without restarting a wholly new legacy warhead program. The page should describe strategic deterrence context and stockpile assurance rather than tactical employment.
