Development history

medium

W80-4 is the W80 life-extension warhead for the LRSO cruise missile and bomber-leg modernization.

W80-4 is the life-extension program version of the W80 warhead for the U.S. Air Force Long-Range Stand-Off cruise missile. NNSA moved the program into Phase 6.4 production engineering in 2023 after design and review milestones. The program is synchronized with the LRSO missile and is intended to sustain the bomber leg of the nuclear triad.

Technical profile

medium

Modern components, safety/security improvement, and LRSO interface work define the public technical profile.

NNSA describes W80-4 requirements in terms of modern components, safety features, existing insensitive high explosive design, and parallel engineering with the Air Force on the warhead-missile interface. Public content should emphasize modernization and assurance rather than design specifics. The warhead is part of a combined missile-warhead program, not a standalone munition.

Operational use

medium

Its planned role is future LRSO bomber-leg nuclear deterrence.

Operationally, W80-4 will support future standoff nuclear strike capability from bombers such as the B-52H and eventually the B-21 as paired with LRSO. Its role is deterrence and bomber-leg credibility, giving the air leg a survivable long-range standoff option. The page should separate planned future role from current legacy W80-1 service.
