Azov Campaign of Strikes
According to the Ukrainian General Staff, on July 11 and the night of July 12, Ukrainian forces struck the Syzran Oil Refinery in the Samara region, as well as ten Russian tankers and four ferries in the waters of the Sea of Azov (Ukrinform, July 12, 2026). The day before, reports indicated the destruction of 21 tankers, four tugs, two bulk carriers, and a dredger. Captains, insurers, border guards, and military logisticians have begun to act as they do in a strike zone: retreating to ports, turning off visibility, delaying passages, and waiting for new orders.

Connection to the Front
On the front on July 11, according to Ukrainian data, there were 260 combat clashes, including 44 attacks in the Pokrovsk direction; Russian troops used 244 guided bombs, 8,866 strike drones, and over three thousand shellings of positions and settlements (Ukrinform, July 12, 2026). This shows that the Russian army maintains a high tactical pace and does not appear structurally paralyzed. Therefore, it would be a mistake to write that strikes on tankers and oil refineries will immediately halt offensive actions. The Russian military system has significant inertia, reserves, and the ability to coerce its logistics.
But there is another consequence: the cost of maintaining the pace is rising. The more fuel has to be transported via detours, the more security, repairs, dispatching, and administrative pressure are required. The more often oil refineries and vessels are damaged, the more air defense resources are diverted from other targets. The more noticeable the shortage in the civilian market, the harder it is for the Kremlin to maintain the usual illusion that the war exists separately from the everyday economy. This is not a collapse, but viscosity. In Russian military history, it is often the viscosity of supply that has been more important than heroic orders.
What This Means for Russian Doctrine
The Russian doctrine traditionally places great importance on the depth of the theater of operations. It was believed that Russian territory provides strategic amortization: the enemy can strike at the front but cannot systematically destroy the deep rear. In 2026, this assumption is quickly aging. Long-range drones, maritime drones, and reconnaissance-strike chains are turning oil refining, ports, ferries, and train compositions into regular targets. This does not make Ukraine a maritime power in the classical sense, but it allows it to challenge Russian logistics where the Russian headquarters previously saw a safe corridor.
My cautious prediction is as follows: Russia will not lose the ability to supply the southern grouping in the coming weeks, but it will be forced to pay for it with an increasingly expensive combination of air defense, administrative prohibitions, covert redistribution of fuel, and reduced commercial transparency of transport. If the Ukrainian campaign maintains the frequency of strikes on vessels, oil refineries, and railway fuel hubs, by the fall of 2026, we will see not one loud crisis, but a series of small disruptions, from which true fatigue of the military machine will emerge.
