Argentine President: We Will Not Resolve the Falkland Islands Sovereignty Dispute by Military Means

On September 21, Xinhua News Agency reported from Buenos Aires (Reporter Zhang Duo) that Argentine President Milei stated on the 21st that he would not resolve the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas Islands (referred to as the Falkland Islands by the UK) through military means.

During a media interview that day, Milei said that the Argentine government is not considering waging war and will insist on seeking diplomatic means to recover sovereignty over the Malvinas. He stated that the British government "should seriously consider peacefully returning these islands to Argentina, as they are Argentine territory."

The Argentine government has recently taken a tough stance on the issue of sovereignty over the Malvinas. On the evening of the 3rd, during a nationwide televised address regarding the Malvinas issue, Milei emphasized that sanctions against foreign companies extracting natural resources in the Malvinas and surrounding disputed waters would be intensified. Sanction procedures have now been initiated against a total of 60 foreign enterprises and individuals.

Argentina and the UK have a dispute over the sovereignty of the Malvinas. In April 1982, the two countries went to war over the issue of sovereignty over the Malvinas, which ended in a British victory. Since Argentina's defeat, it has not given up its claim to sovereignty over the Malvinas, while the UK has refused to negotiate on the sovereignty issue.
