Brazil Promotes Self-Sufficiency in Nuclear Submarine Fuel
According to a report by Reference News Network on May 26, Brazilian magazine "Forum" reported on May 21 that a plan initiated by Brazil's state-owned Navy Project Management Company, the Brazilian Amazon Blue Defense Technology Company, and the Naval Technology Center located in São Paulo aims to achieve domestic production of uranium hexafluoride. This compound is a key raw material in the enrichment stage of nuclear fuel for Brazil's nuclear-powered submarines. Reports indicate that the uranium hexafluoride plant will be located at the Aramar Nuclear Industrial Center in Iperó, São Paulo. This integrated facility is considered the main technological center of Brazil's naval nuclear program.
The plan is one of the most significant initiatives in Brazil's nuclear sector in recent decades. Its goal is to achieve self-sufficiency in all stages of uranium enrichment required for nuclear power generation, providing power for the "Almirante Álvaro Alberto" nuclear-powered submarine currently being developed by the Navy, which will be the first of its kind in South America.
Uranium hexafluoride is a critical substance in the uranium isotope enrichment process. This stage converts processed ore into gas, allowing the material to be fed into high-speed centrifuges to increase the concentration of the uranium-235 isotope. Without this process, it is impossible to produce nuclear fuel for power reactors or ship propulsion systems.
The Amazon Blue Defense Technology Company states that the uranium hexafluoride plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of about 40 tons of uranium hexafluoride. Once the plant is completed, Brazil will control the entire process from ore extraction to nuclear fuel enrichment.
The development of the "Alberto" nuclear submarine is part of the strategic partnership established between Brazil and France in 2008 under Brazil's submarine development program (PROSUB), aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the Brazilian Navy.
Currently, only six countries possess nuclear-powered submarines: the United States, Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom, and India. Therefore, Brazil will become the first country in the Southern Hemisphere to master such technology.
