Canada Announces Order of 12 Submarines from Germany

The report states that TKMS will deliver up to 12 submarines to Canada. As announced by Canadian Prime Minister Carney, Canada has decided to cooperate with Germany. TKMS defeated a South Korean competitor in this deal. Carney announced this decision before departing for Ankara to attend the NATO summit.

According to reports, the German government has actively advocated for this deal multiple times to jointly deter Russia and in light of the security situation in the Atlantic and Arctic regions. Defense Minister Pistorius has made several trips to Canada for talks, the most recent being in May of this year.

Pistorius welcomed Canada's decision on the evening of the 6th. He pointed out that the future submarine fleet will be an important pillar in NATO's strategy to ensure security in the High North. Pistorius said, "We will jointly build the largest and most advanced fleet of conventional submarines in the world. Our 24 submarines will gather information in the North Atlantic, Arctic waters, and the High North, which can be quickly shared, analyzed, and utilized."

For TKMS, this is the largest submarine order in the company's history. Canada will receive the 212CD submarines produced by the shipyard. This model was jointly developed by Germany and Norway. The letters CD stand for "Common Design." This standardization aims to reduce costs and promote cooperation—now Canada joins as the third significant partner.

The report states that to date, about 80% of Canada's military equipment has been procured from the United States. However, since U.S. President Trump took office again, relations between the two countries have severely deteriorated.
