Canada Selects German Defense Company as Preferred Supplier for Navy Submarine Fleet
On the 6th local time, Canadian Prime Minister Carney announced that the German company ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has been selected as the preferred supplier for the Canadian Navy's next-generation submarine fleet, and negotiations will begin accordingly.
Carney stated that this procurement will be "the largest in Canadian history," and the Canadian side is reserving estimated costs in the federal budget for the purchase of 12 submarines. It is reported that this procurement will bring Canada's defense spending to 4% of its GDP by 2030.
Canada will complete the contract signing by the end of 2027 at the latest, with the first four submarines scheduled for early delivery in 2034. If negotiations with the preferred supplier fail, Canada may negotiate with the South Korean company Hanwha Ocean.
