China's First Military Communication Satellite Planned for Launch in 2028

Report Content

Reference News Network reported on October 24 According to a report from the Hindustan Times website on October 19, an Indian senior official familiar with the situation stated on the 19th that the Indian Army's first dedicated communication satellite is expected to be launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation in mid-2028. This satellite will enhance the Army's communication infrastructure and operational capabilities.

It is reported that the satellite, named GSAT-7B, will provide secure, all-weather communication links for the Army in remote border areas and complex terrains, ensuring daily military operations and providing efficient battlefield command and control.

The report points out that this development is significant because, unlike the Indian Air Force and Navy, the Army does not have its own dedicated communication satellite and currently relies on the Air Force's GSAT-7A to meet its communication needs. In March 2023, the Indian Ministry of Defence signed a contract with ISRO's commercial arm, NewSpace India Limited, to develop the advanced GSAT-7B communication satellite for the Army, marking a step towards addressing long-standing requirements.

An unnamed senior official also stated that due to technical reasons, the satellite, originally scheduled for launch in November 2027, will be delayed by six months.

According to reports, this 5-ton satellite is the heaviest communication satellite India has ever built, designed to provide beyond-line-of-sight communication for troops and military formations, weapon systems, airborne platforms, and personnel and equipment involved in other critical missions.

These officials stated that space-based communication is crucial during conflicts, as it provides adaptable communication links that can be used when ground networks are compromised by the enemy. (Translated by Hu Xue)
