Chinese Expert: China and the U.S. Should Work Together to Maintain World Peace

On May 30, Xinhua News Agency reported from Singapore (Reporter Wang Jiawei, Mao Pengfei) that Meng Xiangqing, head of the Chinese People's Liberation Army expert delegation and a professor at the National Defense University, stated that the recent meeting between the leaders of China and the United States has garnered significant attention during the 23rd Shangri-La Dialogue, further underscoring the importance of Sino-U.S. relations. The stability of Sino-U.S. relations not only affects the well-being of the two peoples but also relates to regional stability and world peace.

During a media interview on the same day, Meng Xiangqing expressed that building a "constructive strategic stability relationship between China and the United States" is the most important political consensus from the leaders' meeting. As Chinese leaders have pointed out, "constructive strategic stability" should be primarily cooperative and positively stabilizing, should involve healthy competition with appropriate limits, should be a norm of controllable differences, and should aim for lasting stability with the prospect of peace. This important assertion provides strategic guidance for Sino-U.S. relations for the next three years and beyond.

Meng Xiangqing noted that currently, the economies of China and the United States are deeply intertwined; cooperation benefits both sides, while conflict harms both. Cooperation is key to mitigating risks and enhancing well-being; competition is inevitable, but zero-sum games should be avoided, and fair rules and mutual learning should be upheld to promote improvement through competition.

Meng Xiangqing also stated that both sides should adhere to seeking common ground while reserving differences, maintain policy coherence and honor commitments, manage differences through dialogue, and avoid "roller-coaster" fluctuations in bilateral relations; peaceful coexistence is the bottom line, and both sides need to uphold red lines, eliminate conflicts and confrontations, and jointly maintain world peace.

Meng Xiangqing emphasized that the four "stabilities" are based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation principles, injecting certainty into Sino-U.S. relations and helping major power relations to remain stable and sustainable.

Finally, Meng Xiangqing expressed hope that both China and the United States would move towards each other, implement the important consensus reached by the two leaders, and promote the development of military relations in a healthy, stable, and sustainable direction.
