Cuba: Cuba and the U.S. Agree to Maintain Communication at Military Command Levels

On May 29, Xinhua News Agency reported from Havana (reporters Jiang Biao and Wu Hao) that the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces announced that, with mutual agreement, the Chief of Staff of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces, Roberto Legra Sotolongo, met with the Commander of the U.S. Southern Command, Donovan, on the same day. The delegations discussed issues related to the security of the boundary area surrounding the Guantanamo Naval Base and agreed to maintain communication at the command level between the two militaries.

Earlier that day, the U.S. Southern Command released a message on its social media, stating that Donovan held a brief exchange with senior Cuban military leaders near the U.S. Navy base located in Guantanamo, Cuba, regarding "military operation security matters."

The United States has long imposed an economic and financial blockade and trade embargo on Cuba. Following military actions against Venezuela and Iran earlier this year, U.S. President Trump threatened Cuba, stating, "Cuba is next," and further increased pressure on Cuba by implementing an oil blockade. According to U.S. media reports on the 27th, U.S. military deployments in the Caribbean targeting Cuba have been completed. Meanwhile, dialogue between the U.S. and Cuba continues, but there has been no substantial progress.
