Electromagnetic Catapult ×2! How Will the Fujian and Sichuan Ships Pair Up? Experts Propose Two Models
November 5 marks the one-year anniversary of the commissioning of China's first electromagnetic catapult aircraft carrier, the Fujian. A year ago, the Fujian was officially commissioned, and the People's Navy entered the "three aircraft carrier era." Now, the People's Navy has opened a new chapter — the "Attack-21" stealth drone has successfully taken off and landed on the Type 076 amphibious assault ship, the Sichuan.
Both the Fujian and Sichuan utilize electromagnetic catapults, and although the Sichuan is an amphibious assault ship, it is also referred to as a "drone carrier." Is it possible that in the future, the Sichuan and Fujian could form an integrated combat group?

Military observer Wei Dongxu stated that they can indeed be used in conjunction, with roughly two modes available.
The first mode is for the Fujian to take the lead in offense, while the Sichuan focuses on logistics. During amphibious operations, the carrier group can control air superiority, maritime control, and electromagnetic dominance over the surrounding area. This way, the Sichuan remains in a secure state while deploying amphibious and island assault forces.
The second mode of operation involves the Fujian leading the attack while the Sichuan provides support. For example, the Sichuan can carry more "Attack-21" drones, allowing it to switch to a drone carrier status, forming a maritime combat system where "1+1>2" with the Fujian.
The People's Liberation Army Navy is integrating the Fujian and Sichuan aircraft carriers for joint operations, utilizing electromagnetic catapults and UAVs. The Fujian, commissioned a year ago, and the Sichuan, known as a drone carrier, may operate in two modes: one focusing on direct attack and the other on support roles. This integration enhances naval operational capabilities.
- Fujian aircraft carrier was commissioned one year ago on November 5, 2022.
- Sichuan amphibious assault ship is also referred to as a 'drone carrier'.
- Both carriers utilize electromagnetic catapults for launching aircraft.
- Potential operational modes for joint missions were proposed by military observers.
