EU Approves €6.1 Billion Military Aid to Ukraine
Xinhua News Agency, Brussels, August 24 (Reporters Zhang Zhaoqing and Zhang Xinwen) - The European Commission approved on the 24th to provide 6.1 billion euros in defense assistance to Ukraine for the procurement of urgently needed missile defense systems, ammunition, and radar.
The European Commission stated in a statement that most of the equipment procured will come from EU defense companies. The EU will significantly increase the delivery of equipment to Ukraine by reallocating stock, adjusting order priorities, and expanding production.
The statement said that this funding comes from the 90 billion euros in aid loans provided by the EU to Ukraine. In April, the EU officially approved a loan of 90 billion euros to Ukraine to provide financial and military support from 2026 to 2027.
The statement noted that since 2022, the EU and its member states have provided a total of 220.2 billion euros in support to Ukraine, of which 3.8 billion euros comes from the proceeds of frozen Russian assets.
