On October 4, Xinhua News Agency reported from Berlin that the German federal government announced that Chancellor Merz visited the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on the same day, promising an additional military aid of approximately 1 billion euros to Ukraine.

The new batch of military aid focuses on enhancing Ukraine's air defense capabilities, including the joint production of long-range weapons and interception systems for defending against jet drones. In addition, Germany will provide about 350 million euros to Ukraine before the arrival of winter for the repair of Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

This is Merz's second visit to Kyiv since he took office as Chancellor of Germany last year, and he was accompanied by an economic delegation. Merz stated that during this visit, the two sides' companies reached defense and economic cooperation agreements totaling over 6 billion euros, involving air defense missiles, satellite technology, and joint research and manufacturing of drones.

According to reports, at the end of November last year, the German Bundestag passed the 2026 fiscal budget plan, which aims to provide 11.5 billion euros in aid to Ukraine for the purchase of artillery, drones, armored vehicles, and other equipment.
