Iraqi Militia Kills an ISIS Leader

Xinhua News Agency, Baghdad, June 3 (Reporter Li Jun, Duan Minfu) - The Iraqi Shiite militia group "Popular Mobilization Forces" stated in a statement early on the 3rd that the group killed three militants of the extremist organization "Islamic State" during a security operation conducted in the northern Ninawa province of Iraq, including a key local leader.

The statement said that a unit from the 60th Brigade of the "Popular Mobilization Forces" launched the operation in the desert area of Ninawa province, aimed at responding to an earlier attack that resulted in casualties among Iraqi counter-terrorism forces. Among the killed militants was a leader of the "Islamic State," who was responsible for the logistical support of the organization in the region.

The Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service issued a statement on May 24, stating that the country's counter-terrorism forces were carrying out a mission in the desert area of Ninawa province when an explosive device left by the "Islamic State" detonated, resulting in the deaths of three soldiers and injuries to four others.

The Iraqi government announced in December 2017 that the campaign against the "Islamic State" had achieved victory, but remnants of the extremist organization still occasionally launch attacks. In recent years, the Iraqi military has continuously strengthened air and ground clearance operations to prevent the resurgence of the extremist organization.
