Israel Claims Attack on Hamas' New Military Leader
Xinhua News Agency, Jerusalem, May 26 (Reporters Pang Xinyi and Chen Junqing) Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Katz issued a joint statement on the evening of the 26th, stating that the Israel Defense Forces attacked the newly appointed military leader of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), Muhammad Awad, in the Gaza Strip that day.
The Israeli side claimed that Awad was "one of the planners" of the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, during which he served as the head of Hamas's intelligence department. Awad took over about a week ago from the then military leader of Hamas, Izaddin al-Qassam, who was assassinated by the Israeli military.
According to the Israel Times, a residential building in Gaza City, northern Gaza Strip, was hit, with local reports indicating two people were killed and ten injured.
The Israeli statement also said that they would "continue to pursue" those involved in the Hamas attack on Israel.
On May 26, 2023, the Israel Defense Forces conducted an airstrike in Gaza City targeting Hamas military leader Muhammad Awad, who was implicated in the planning of the October 7 attack on Israel.
