On July 18, the radar of the "Blue Sea 201" research vessel showed that the Japan Coast Guard patrol vessel PLH42 "Shunguang" attempted to approach our research vessel. Meanwhile, the Chinese Coast Guard ship 2305, which was carrying out routine law enforcement patrols in the surrounding waters, remained highly vigilant and successfully intercepted the Japanese "Shunguang" patrol vessel outside a 14 nautical mile range from our research vessel, making it difficult for the Japanese ship to get closer.
That evening, a reporter from the Global Times saw through the radar images of the "Blue Sea 201" that another Chinese Coast Guard vessel, ship 1401, was also speeding towards the area to join the escort mission.
The two ships formed an escort "formation" in a flanking position, firmly placing the "Blue Sea 201" research vessel under protection.
