Report Content

According to a report by Reference News Network on April 16, Taiwan's "Central News Agency" reported on April 13 that the Philippines, the United States, and Australia recently completed the second round of this year's "Multilateral Maritime Cooperation Activities" (MMCA) joint patrol exercises in the South China Sea to enhance their collaborative combat capabilities.

The Philippine military stated today that the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, and the Australian Defence Force conducted the "Multilateral Maritime Cooperation Activities" joint patrol exercises from the 9th to the 12th in the "West Philippine Sea" (which refers to our South China Sea - note from this newspaper).

The Philippine military pointed out that this is the second round of "Multilateral Maritime Cooperation Activities" held this year with like-minded countries, and the 16th round in the past three years. The latest round of activities highlights the "deepening defense cooperation among the three parties and their shared commitment to regional security."

During the exercises, the Philippine military deployed the offshore patrol vessel "Raja Suleiman," FA-50 light fighter jets, W-3A "Hawk" multipurpose helicopters, and the Coast Guard also sent the patrol vessel "Melchora Aquino."

The United States mobilized the amphibious landing ship "Ashland"; Australia sent the frigate "Toowoomba," MH-60R "Seahawk" helicopters, and P-8A "Poseidon" maritime patrol aircraft.

The exercise activities included maritime replenishment, rendezvous procedures, communications, maritime situational awareness, area tactics and duty officer drills, overflights, photography, nighttime formation sailing, and exercise summaries. The Philippine military had previously revealed that although the "Multilateral Maritime Cooperation Activities" are named exercises, they have gradually shifted to being "a part of actual combat design." This exercise originated from the "Maritime Cooperation Activities" exercises that began in November 2023.
