Lebanese President: This Round of Conflict Has Damaged Nearly 18% of Lebanon's Territory
Xinhua News Agency, Beirut, June 18 (Reporter Cao Changhao, Shen Feng) Lebanese President Aoun stated on the 18th that the current round of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has resulted in nearly 18% of Lebanese territory being damaged and over 3,500 deaths.
Aoun said that approximately 68,000 housing units in Lebanon have been destroyed, and 277 towns and villages have been affected; about 11,000 people have been injured, and around 1 million have been displaced, with some bodies of the deceased still buried under the rubble. The destruction caused by the war is not limited to military targets but also affects civilian facilities such as residences, roads, electricity, water supply, schools, and hospitals, making post-disaster reconstruction difficult.
Aoun stated that the Lebanese government is continuously promoting reforms in the economic, financial, administrative, and judicial fields, as these reforms are an inherent requirement for Lebanon to achieve economic recovery and national reconstruction.
He also expressed that Lebanon's stability and security are not only crucial for the Middle East but also hold significant importance for Europe. He called on the international community to continue supporting the Lebanese government, army, and security forces in maintaining domestic stability and promoting national recovery.
After the United States and Israel launched a large-scale military operation against Iran on February 28, the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah reignited on March 2. A temporary ceasefire lasting 10 days began on April 17, which has been extended multiple times. However, since the ceasefire took effect, the Israeli military has launched attacks on Hezbollah, citing violations of the ceasefire agreement, and has dismantled and destroyed what it calls "Hezbollah military infrastructure" in the southern regions of Lebanon it occupies. The United States and Iran recently signed a memorandum of understanding, which includes a halt to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon.
