Marines Prove 2,000-Mile Pacific Radios But Not Sea Denial

Two thousand miles is the useful number. On July 23, Marines in Manila and Darwin established two-way high-frequency voice communications across roughly that distance using a TRC-209 amplifier paired with an AN/PRC-160 radio, according to U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. Four days later, INDOPACOM described the shot as proof that Marine Rotational Force-Southeast Asia and Marine Rotational Force-Darwin can maintain command and control from austere locations across the Pacific.

That is real progress. It is also easy to overstate. A radio path from the Philippines to northern Australia helps a distributed force survive when satellites are degraded and fiber is cut. It does not, by itself, turn small Marine units into a durable sea-denial network against the People's Liberation Army Navy.

Anyone who has stood watch on a destroyer understands the difference between hearing the circuit and fighting through it. Communications are the nervous system. They are not the magazines, the fuel bladders, the launchers, or the repair parts.

The Radio Shot Matters

The July 23 test matters because the geography is unforgiving. Manila to Darwin is approximately the same operating problem that haunts every U.S. concept for the western Pacific: units are separated by ocean distances measured in thousands of miles, while Chinese sensors, missiles, and coast guard ships work close to home.

INDOPACOM said the Marines used a TRC-209 amplifier and AN/PRC-160 radio for the shot, but also noted that similar long-range communications can be achieved with man-portable AN/PRC-160 radios and field-expedient antennas. One Marine described using a sloping V antenna to direct the signal toward Darwin without depending on heavier equipment. That detail is more important than the press-release phrasing. A forward unit that can improvise antennas, shift waveforms, and keep a low signature has a better chance of staying alive than one tied to a fixed command post.

High frequency is old technology with new relevance. It can bend over the horizon through ionospheric propagation, it does not need a satellite in the middle, and it is harder to target than a big, obvious node. INDOPACOM quoted a Marine communications chief calling HF one of the most resilient long-haul pathways because it is difficult to detect, locate, and jam. That is broadly right, with a caveat: difficult is not impossible. In a China fight, every transmission is a bet against a large electronic warfare system looking for mistakes.

China Is Testing a Different Map

The opposing side is not static. Defense News reported this month that China has been keeping coast guard vessels in waters east of Taiwan, about 54 nautical miles from the island, turning what used to look like episodic pressure into something closer to routine presence. ISW's July 10 China-Taiwan update reached the same conclusion, assessing that Beijing is likely implementing permanent China Coast Guard patrols east of Taiwan.

That matters for the Marine Corps because the east side of Taiwan is the side U.S. planners often treat as operational depth. If Chinese white hulls can normalize patrol patterns there, they complicate the routes that would matter for resupply, evacuation, surveillance, and blockade enforcement. The point is not that a coast guard ship can defeat a Marine littoral regiment. The point is that Beijing is practicing the administrative control needed before a crisis, not after one starts.

Then there is the missile test. Defense News reported that China fired a submarine-launched ballistic missile from the South China Sea into the Pacific, with a simulated training warhead traveling about 7,300 kilometers. ISW assessed that the missile landed between Tuvalu and the Gilbert Islands of Kiribati and that the launcher was very likely a Type 09IV ballistic missile submarine. Analysts differed on whether the missile was a JL-2 or JL-3, but the operational message is plain enough: Beijing wants a sea-based nuclear deterrent that can threaten the United States without sending its submarines through chokepoints where U.S. and allied forces can hunt them.

Put the pieces together. The U.S. Marine Corps is proving it can talk across 2,000 miles. China is proving it can patrol east of Taiwan and shoot a ballistic missile roughly 7,300 kilometers into the Pacific. These are not symmetrical demonstrations. One is a survivability tool for distributed forces. The other is a pressure campaign plus a nuclear signaling event.

RIMPAC Shows Scale, Not Access

The same week, INDOPACOM highlighted RIMPAC 2026, where 30 nations, 30 surface ships, five submarines, more than 190 aircraft, 15 national land forces, and about 30,000 personnel are operating around Hawaii from June 24 to July 31. During live-fire SINKEX events, participating units sank the decommissioned cruiser USS Mobile Bay and amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu in waters 15,000 feet deep more than 50 nautical miles off Kauai.

That is useful training. It shows allied targeting, command relationships, and weapons employment against full-size hulks at sea. But Hawaii is not Luzon Strait, and a scheduled SINKEX is not a contested resupply run under missile threat. The hard problem is moving from coalition proficiency in open-ocean exercises to persistent access inside the weapons engagement zone.

This is where the 2,000-mile HF shot should be judged. It is a necessary brick in the wall. It helps Marines in the Philippine archipelago link back to Australia when other networks are under stress. It supports expeditionary advanced base operations, especially small teams that need to receive tasking, pass targeting data, and coordinate movement without advertising themselves through high-bandwidth systems.

But sea denial requires more than contact reports and voice nets. It requires anti-ship missiles in sufficient numbers, reload plans, deception, air defense, unmanned sensors, casualty evacuation, fuel distribution, and political permission to operate from real terrain. The Marine Corps can solve some of that. Host nations decide much of the rest.

The Gap Is Sustainment

The uncomfortable calculation is endurance. A small unit with an AN/PRC-160 can talk. A small unit with a handful of Naval Strike Missiles can shoot. After that, the questions get ugly. How many rounds are on the island? How quickly can batteries displace after firing? Can fuel move at night without creating a signature? Can wounded Marines get out if the runway is cratered? Can the unit keep transmitting after three days of rain, heat, and electronic attack?

Washington likes distributed operations because they complicate Chinese targeting. Beijing will like them too if they create isolated American detachments that are hard to resupply and politically costly to reinforce.

The July radio shot deserves attention precisely because it is modest. It shows Marines working one of the problems that actually decides whether a Pacific force can function after the first missile salvo. But the math still favors the side that can sustain pressure longer. A 2,000-mile voice circuit is a start. It is not yet a kill chain, and it is not yet a campaign plan.
