Media: Israel and Lebanon Reach Framework Agreement on Minor Troop Withdrawal
Xinhua News Agency, Jerusalem, June 26 (Reporter Feng Guorui, Wang Zhuolun) According to multiple Israeli media reports on the 26th, Israel and Lebanon have reached a framework agreement regarding the withdrawal of Israeli troops from certain areas in southern Lebanon. According to the agreement, the Israeli military will withdraw from two areas within its approximately 6-mile (about 9.7 kilometers) deep "security zone" established in southern Lebanon, and the evacuated areas will be taken over by the Lebanese army.
The Times of Israel reported, citing sources, that the Israeli military has completed the removal of Hezbollah-related infrastructure in the aforementioned areas. The Jerusalem Post stated that this framework agreement was reached during the fifth round of negotiations held in Washington, D.C., between the two sides. The negotiations were mediated by the United States, and the U.S. State Department will subsequently hold a small signing ceremony.
The reports also indicated that the U.S. originally hoped for both sides to reach an agreement on the last day of the scheduled negotiations, which was the 25th, but due to differences between the two sides, the negotiation period was extended.
