Mystery Chinese ‘stealth fighter’ was just a fire trainer

Satellite images showing a stealth fighter-shaped object at a former Chinese airport turn out to depict a fire-fighting trainer mock-up, according to Chinese aerospace analyst Andreas Rupprecht.

Rupprecht made the assessment in an August 25 post on X, sharing images that show Chinese military firefighters conducting a live training exercise around the mock-up, including one photo showing it engulfed in smoke and flame while crews hosed it down.

“You surely remember these strange J-20-look alike models, some claimed them to be a new single engined stealth fighter, at Jining Qufu AP, which I already back then rated as fire-fighting trainer mock-ups. Here finally two clearer images!” Rupprecht wrote.

The training photos, credited to China’s Eastern Theater Command on Weibo, show firefighters in protective gear spraying water on the mock-up’s fuselage and dousing a fire set at its base, with a black plume of smoke rising from the exercise. The mock-up’s canopy, twin tails and general silhouette closely track the J-20, though the aircraft’s actual radar-absorbent skin and internal systems would not be replicated in a ground training prop.

The object first drew wide attention in April 2025, when satellite imagery showed a stealth fighter-like shape with a modified diamond-delta wing platform, canards and twin vertical tails parked on the apron in front of the passenger terminal at Jining Qufu Airport in Shandong Province, The War Zone reported at the time. Planet Labs imagery reviewed by the outlet showed the object had been present since at least September 2024. The War Zone’s report was syndicated by Yahoo News, extending its reach well beyond the specialist defense press.

Jining Qufu Airport was officially closed in December 2023, according to The War Zone. The facility had previously been collocated with a People’s Liberation Army Air Force base, a detail that fed speculation the object was tied to a classified aircraft program rather than routine ground training.

At the time of the initial sighting, The War Zone noted the object bore some resemblance to the Baidi Type-B, a fictional “space fighter” concept China’s Aviation Industry Corporation displayed at the 2024 Zhuhai airshow, though with significant differences. Analysts also compared it to vaguely J-20-like shapes that had appeared at Lintao Air Base in 2022, which Rupprecht assessed at the time as likely decoys, potentially tied to film or television production rather than any operational aircraft program.

The Jining Qufu sighting emerged amid a broader wave of speculation about Chinese next-generation fighter programs. China’s tailless J-36 and J-XDS, also referred to as the J-50, had both surfaced in satellite and social media imagery in late 2024 and early 2025, drawing extensive coverage from outlets including Army Recognition, Interesting Engineering, National Security Journal and 19FortyFive, much of it built on unconfirmed claims about engine counts, stealth features and operational status. Some of that broader coverage folded the Jining Qufu object into the same narrative of an emerging single-engine stealth design, despite the object never being confirmed as an aircraft in flight or under active test.

The Eastern Theater Command imagery now confirms the mock-up’s actual role: a full-scale prop used to train ground crews and firefighters on responding to a burning stealth-shaped aircraft, a standard part of military airfield emergency preparedness.
