NATO Deploys Additional "Patriot" Systems in Turkey
Xinhua News Agency, Ankara, March 18 (Reporter Xiong Sihao) - Turkish Defense Ministry spokesman Zeki Aktürk stated on the 18th that NATO is deploying an additional set of "Patriot" missile defense systems in southeastern Turkey in response to regional tensions and the need to protect Turkish airspace.
Aktürk said at a press conference held at the Incirlik Air Base in Adana Province, southeastern Turkey, that NATO Allied Air Command has deployed a set of "Patriot" missile defense systems, originally stationed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, to Adana Province in Turkey to supplement the existing "Patriot" missile defense system brought in from Spain.
On the 10th, the Turkish Defense Ministry stated that NATO had deployed a set of "Patriot" missile defense systems in Malatya Province, southeastern Turkey, to protect the Kurecik early warning radar station located in the province.
On the 13th, the Turkish Defense Ministry stated in a statement that following interceptions on the 4th and 9th, NATO forces deployed in the eastern Mediterranean intercepted a ballistic missile launched from Iran that entered Turkish airspace. However, on the same day, the Iranian embassy in Turkey issued a statement denying that Iran had launched missiles at Turkey.
