NATO Deploys Drone Task Force to the Arctic, Russian Experts: Russia Must Maintain Military Vigilance

[Global Times Comprehensive Report] "NATO has deployed a drone task force to the Arctic to test unmanned systems." RT reported on the 9th that NATO ships set sail from La Spezia, Italy, over the weekend to conduct drone testing in waters near Iceland, with the project planned to continue operations until 2027.

NATO Allied Command Transformation Commander General Wondier stated that the purpose of deploying the task force is to test and integrate drone technology in the most complex operational environments on Earth, to help NATO determine future standards and maintain the operational advantages necessary to operate, adapt, and win in the Arctic region. This action is part of NATO's large-scale operational plan approved in The Hague in 2025, implemented concurrently with the "Arctic Sentinel" operation in the Arctic region.

RT reported that European countries have been defending their expansion in the Arctic region under the pretext of a so-called "Russian threat." Russia denies these claims, stating that the militarization of the region is driven by NATO's own actions. Russia has repeatedly warned about NATO's expansion in the Arctic and has promised to respond accordingly. Currently, Russia controls more than half of the Arctic coastline.

The editor-in-chief of Russian Defense magazine, Korotchenko, stated that NATO's plan to test advanced military technology in the Arctic may be for the same purpose as a series of recent exercises held by NATO in the Baltic Sea, aimed at implementing a maritime blockade against Russia's Kaliningrad region and cutting off maritime trade with Russia. Russian experts say that under the current circumstances, Russia must maintain military vigilance.
