On February 5, the Russia-U.S. New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty expired. On the 6th, Russian President's Press Secretary Peskov stated, that Russia and the United States will take a responsible stance on the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty issue, and both sides believe it is necessary to start negotiations on this topic as soon as possible.

Peskov mentioned that the future of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty was discussed during the talks in Abu Dhabi, and a consensus has been reached.

U.S. Secretary of State says U.S. and Russia need a "completely new treaty"

On the 6th, U.S. Secretary of State Rubio stated that after the expiration of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty on the 5th, a "completely new treaty" is needed, and the U.S. will maintain a "strong, credible, and modernized nuclear deterrent." Rubio also accused Russia of "violating treaty provisions for years and ceasing to comply with the treaty in 2023," claiming that he "will not accept treaty terms that undermine U.S. interests."

The U.S. and Russia signed the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty in 2010, aimed at limiting the number of nuclear warheads and delivery vehicles deployed by both countries. The treaty officially took effect on February 5, 2011, originally set for a duration of 10 years, later extended through negotiations to February 5, 2026. In February 2023, Russian President Putin announced the suspension of Russia's compliance with the treaty, citing that the U.S. demands Russia comply with all treaty provisions while acting "at its own discretion." U.S. President Trump stated on social media on the 5th that rather than extending the expiring New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, efforts should be made to formulate a "revised and modernized" new treaty that can be effective in the long term.
