North Korea Condemns Landmine Explosion as a "Self-Directed Performance" by South Korea

Report Content

Reference News Network, October 28 report According to the Korean Central News Agency on October 26, the Permanent Representative of North Korea to the United Nations sent a letter to the President of the UN Security Council on the 25th, regarding South Korea's provocative act of arbitrarily shifting the responsibility for the suspicious "landmine explosion incident" that occurred near the southern border on September 21 to North Korea.

The letter pointed out that the so-called "landmine explosion incident" manufactured by South Korea is aimed at slandering North Korea's fortification of the southern border as a "military infringement," and is a "sinister obstruction activity" intended to delay and prevent it; this incident is merely a farce staged to shirk responsibility for escalating the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

The ongoing fortification of the southern border by North Korea is a self-defense measure to maintain the security of its territory against external invasion threats, and is a legitimate exercise of sovereignty fully in accordance with the United Nations Charter and international law.

Nevertheless, South Korea has resorted to extremely risky provocative actions, including shooting behaviors that seriously threaten the safety of North Korean soldiers participating in the border fortification work.

This seriously violates the relevant provisions of Article 2, Paragraph 4 of the United Nations Charter: the use of force or threats against the territorial integrity of any state is prohibited in international relations.

North Korea warns that if South Korea disregards North Korea's warnings and infringes upon North Korea's territorial and sovereign integrity, all consequences and responsibilities arising therefrom will be entirely borne by South Korea.

According to a report by the Korean Central News Agency on October 26, the Permanent Representative of North Korea to the United Nations sent a letter to the President of the UN Security Council on the 25th, rebutting that the "landmine explosion incident" in the Korean Demilitarized Zone was a "self-directed farce" by South Korea.

On the 22nd, South Korea's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Cho Tae-yong, sent a letter to the rotating President of the Security Council this month, reflecting the situation related to the "landmine explosion incident" involving North Korea in the Demilitarized Zone.

The South Korean military previously stated that on September 21, a South Korean soldier on a mission in the Demilitarized Zone south of the Military Demarcation Line was seriously injured due to a North Korean landmine explosion. The South Korean military accused North Korea of continuously advancing the so-called "border reinforcement project" and planting landmines near the Military Demarcation Line.
