Putin: The Iran Conflict Puts Russia in a "Complex Situation"
On May 9, Xinhua News Agency reported from Moscow (Reporter Huang He) that Russian President Putin stated at a press conference that due to Russia's good relations with both Iran and the Gulf Arab states, the situation in Iran has made Russia's position "complicated."
Putin said that if the situation escalates, "everyone will be harmed," and that any agreement to resolve the current conflict should align with the interests of the countries in the region.
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a large-scale military operation against Iran, which retaliated with missile and drone strikes against Israel and U.S. military bases in the Middle East, affecting Gulf countries.
Putin also stated that Russia is aware that Iran has no plans to develop nuclear weapons, and the International Atomic Energy Agency has never indicated that there is evidence showing Iran is developing nuclear weapons. Additionally, Russia's proposal to receive Iran's enriched uranium is not intended to "seize political capital," but rather aims to contribute to easing the situation as much as possible.
According to a report by U.S. media on March 13, Putin had suggested during a phone call with U.S. President Trump to transfer Iran's enriched uranium to Russia to help end the conflict quickly, but Trump rejected the idea. On April 15, Russian presidential spokesman Peskov stated in an interview with Indian media that Putin is prepared to reconsider the proposal to transport Iran's enriched uranium to Russia.
